An idea for a Suitcase of Wonders business card led me to this old-school stamp shop in the East Village of New York City.
On a hot August day, I took the A train from my home just outside of Ft. Tryon Park, down to 14th street, and walked across town to 1st Ave and 11th. I was happy to see there are still quite a few odd little places to stumble upon in that neighborhood as you stroll past the boutiques and modern coffee shops. Along the way to Casey's I also peeked in at a couple of the legendary Lower East Side Community Gardens, gloriously thriving in vacant lots wedged between buildings.
John Casey proved to be a delightful and enigmatic conversationist. Seeing as I was magician, John recollected about a time when a mentalist was in his shop, and he blew the mind of a lady customer with a mind-reading trick. He said as the mentalist was performing, John realized that, astonishingly, he knew the secret of the trick, only because he once attended a magician's conference many years ago with a friend. John said the lady was amazed a second time, after he also read her mind.
