This past weekend I was browsing in a community-run used bookstore located about thirty blocks from where I live, All of the store's books are donated, so my family and I were there to drop off some old children's' books. It was my first time there, and as usual at book stores, I perused the hobby and games section to see if there were any magic books.
I had no luck, as there wasn't even a book of card tricks among the chess, bridge and woodworking titles. However, just before leaving, my eye caught the words, "Cups and Balls" on the spine of a thin blue paperback lying flat on top of some old science fiction books. Pulling it out, I recognized the author, Frank Garcia, as a legendary card magician from the seventies. I was unaware he was known, (as was indicated under his name), as, "The Man With The Million Dollar Hands."
Perhaps one day I will find a way to put together a cups and balls routine (using a move or two from this book?), that is practical for performance in the limited stage area of the Suitcase of Wonders. Until then, I will continue to work on an off-shoot of that classic trick - the one ball, one cup, Chop Cup.
